Mike Malaska looks at bunkers in the M-System series. Bunkers are one of the most feared shots in golf, but in Mike's opinion, it is one of the easiest to hit well.
First, you must understand what you are really trying to do in the bunkers. The ball is sitting in the sand, but in reality, you aren't hitting the ball. You are hitting the sand and throwing sand. The ball goes where the sand goes.
Bunker play is a more straightforward concept than thinking about trying to hit the ball one or two inches behind the ball. Again, this is about hitting and throwing sand. You set up, hit, and throw sand. Think of the ball as another grain of sand.
Once you understand that concept, getting the ball out of the bunker and onto the green is easy.
Mike demonstrates with a cup of sand and a ball placed on top. You realize how heavy the sand in the cup actually is. This is the amount of sand you must throw when you hit the ball and where speed comes into play.
The key takeaway is that you are throwing sand.
